'RURP belays'. Yikes! Fine if there are about 50 of them but otherwise nope...

The rurp belay is a joke

On the first ascent one of the guys complained the leaders belays were not good enough. So the next pitch he belayed on rurps with a hidden bolt around the corner!

In reply to Derry:

Beyond nails! (climbing nail-heads would probably be easier and safer)

I think this is a great portrait of someone who has been to hell and back - the eyes, the jaw & folded arms speak volumes - full marks to whoever took it.

Agreed. I've seen a lot of people with that totally f*cked look - but this portrait takes pride of place.

apologies for the stupid question in advance - how does a big wall solo climber retrieve placed gear from a pitch? ab off the belay and re-climb with an ascenders etc?

cheers

Yes, well written and makes me glad I am not doing similar, like being in the trenches. It is a hardcore pursuit.

To add a little more detail to the last but one comment. Pull up the haul line, which it tied to the end of the lead line. Ab down the haul line. Ascend the lead line on jumars cleaning the protection as you go.
