Drummers in Bands

Friday night is music night! And tonight it is drummers. I am just listening to Halfbreed by Keef Hartley Band and I think it is a great example of a drummer leading a band without dominating it. Other examples are Ginger Baker's Airforce & Jon Hiseman's Coliseum.
So two questions for you.
What is your favourite drummer led band?
Who is your favourite drummer in a band?

Numbers 1 and 2 are no surprise.
I always liked Cozy Powell who graced Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Rainbow and who can forget the great Phil Rudd in AC/DC, one of my favourite rock n roll bands.

Even though it's well before my time - I'd nominate Keith Moon. Listen to the drumming on My Generation

In reply to keith-ratcliffe:

Well, I don't know if any of these drummers could be said to have lead their band, their colleagues also being so talented, but they have certainly been integral to my enjoyment of the music:

Keith Moon, The Who: Many songs seem driven by his drumming, from the Kids are Alright to Won't Get Fooled Again.

Clem Burke, Blondie: In Dreaming and Union City Blue he is magnificent, and he does a mean stick twirl.

Pete Thomas, The Attractions, with Elvis Costello: I love to watch their performances from the 70s. Pete and the rest are all brilliant, but he really shone for me in (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding. I also loved the way he drove the final few seconds of their Glastonbury 2013 performance.

As above, Stuart Copeland, Neil Peart, Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer.

Add in Bonham, and any of Zappa’s drummers and you’ve got the full set.
And Dave Grohl.

I saw the Who at Salford Uni in 1968 with Keith Moon and they were fantastic - they did a hits set then an early version of Tommy. It was so different from a normal rock band set but you could see the quality.

+1 for Clem Burke - Union City blue is top Blondie tune.

In a band of three virtuosos, Alex Lifeson always seems a bit underrated as a guitarist, but he’s really on form in that clip! Wringing a lovely noise out of that gorgeous Gibson.

Not sure about favourite, but I randomly stumbled across someone called Martha Hill playing a gig in Aberdeen earlier this week and really enjoyed it, lots of energy and the band seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

Danny Carey of Tool is a drummer that makes the insanely technical sound and look like the most natural thing ever. Loads of good drummer-cam and drums workshop vids on YouTube.

For pure listening enjoyment, it's either Brendan Canty from Fugazi or Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins.

Stephen Morris has always come across as a thoroughly decent bloke as well an excellent drummer - someone who’s contribution is always noticeable but never dominating. Plus he mastered the technique of drumming slower yet faster, which took some doing.....

More recently the drummer that most impressed me live was Cat from Honeyblood (and recently stepped in to help Mogwai out) - not quite sure what personal issues she was exorcising but someone has pissed her off !

First time I saw Supergrass when they were just a backing band.
Danny something ( the one whose dad used to be on top gear).
He beat the kit senseless for the entire set while the other three stood and watched.

Yep
One of my fave guitarists is Jeff Beck, and on his Ronnie Scott’s gigs he has Zappa’s old drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and Tal Walkenfeld on Bass. Absolutely brilliant.
Don’t even get me started on Terry Bozzio playing Zappa’s ‘Black Page’

I heard Alice Cooper yesterday on R2, picking a couple of favourite tracks. I liked him a lot. His first choice was The Train Kept A-Rollin by the Yardbirds. He said (something like) "You've got Eric Clapton, Jimmie Page and Jeff Beck in your band. Not bad, eh?"

Yet another vote for Keith Moon from me.

Honourable mention to Bonzo too.

And, just because I feel that this list should include a Welshman, Terry Williams of Man, Rockpile and, errm, some other band.

Dave Grohl obviously.

Can't think of any bands that I'd call "drummer led" but some standouts for me have been
David Narcizo (Throwing Muses)
Stephen Morris (New order)
Michael Smoughton (Saloon)
Tyson Vogel (Two Gallants)

Tyson is the "obvious" one, a ferocious style like Animal from the Muppets crossed with Captain Caveman, and half of a two piece band somehow sharing credit almost equally with writer, guitarist and singer

Forgot to mention Liam Genocky, now apparently Steeleye Span but to me he's Paul Brady's drummer.

Not many drummer-led bands mentioned above. The obvious one would be Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Nifty drummer and so many amazing horn players (not to mention Mr Silver's piany playing).

Tony Allen. Fela Kuti's drummer who's done loads of stuff since. This thread just made me look him up and he's got a new album out. The track I've got on now is awesome.

If you rate Zappa's drummers you might find this interesting, basically 5 of his drummers discussing their experiences of playing for him, quite long but interesting.
