I may be well off the mark here but the pitch gets it's nickname, I think, from the first attempt at the route by Brown, Allen and Underwood when they were spectacularly thrown out of the gully. The classic Winter climbing book, 'Cold Climbs' (1983) has a damn fine piece by Colin Stead about the route and a massive selection of photos from the earlier days of many of our trade routes but without direct reference to the origins of The Rogue.
