Once saw a band called Rockmungous in the White Hart Inn near Newnham when I was over there bore surfing a (good) few years ago.
They were pretty good musicians - mostly covers, some their own material - and a good laugh, too.

Incidentally I heard Dave Gilmour doing an interview on the radio a few years ago, he was asked about the Aussie Pink Floyd are said they're better than the real Pink Floyd ever were back in the day.

The Who also covered Young Man's Blues and Shakin' All Over on Live at Leeds. They did a version of The Last Time in support of the Stones when they were being charged over drugs offences (the Marianne Faithful incident I think), and they also did a great cover of Baby Don't You Do It. Probably some others as well.

They must have had a change of heart (early 70's?). On one version of Summertime Blues (late 60's?), Daltrey actually tells the audience that they only cover this one song. I still think their version is better than Buddy Holly's original.

You're quite right! Great as he was, it was Eddie Cochran of course. He died just after I was born and Holly just before but I still think they are streets ahead of much of the stuff I hear that's 'popular' with young people nowadays. Has rock and roll really died?

I saw your post and switched over for a look. I didn't stay long. It's not The Who in particular but, in general, I find 'old rockers' a bit underwhelming. They are almost always a shadow of themselves in their angry, energetic (relevant?) prime. How can a 70-something rip it up like a 20-year-old? I think if you're a die-hard, faithful fan though, then even the older version will be enough. I was lucky to be a teenager when live music was easily available and affordable with lots of different genres to latch onto. I was greatly into hard/heavy rock and saw some huge (or soon to be) bands. I suppose if you wanted to catch a glimpse of your heroes in their prime then a good cover band might fit the bill? I've never been that bothered to go and watch one myself.

I totally agree, I've got some great memories that I don't want tarnished. However having said that I would be tempted to go and see Iggy or Cave again though, because they're still doing new stuff.

I saw the Who in 1975 when they were at their peak. Best concert I’ve ever been to. Recent performances are pale shadows of their youth!

I never saw The Who. I wasn't really aware of them touring in the late seventies when I was a student watching lots of bands. I knew they were very, very Loud though! It's a wonder I can still hear when it took days for my ears to stop ringing after a typical concert.

So did I, October 5/6 apparently, at Belle Vue Manchester, on the Who by Numbers tour, thanks to Wikipedia. Found an audio recording on YouTube as well.

I've seen The Flaming Lips lots of times. Sometimes they do a thing where they sound check after the support and it it gradually morphs into the gig.

Their singer - Jim - used to be the singer in my Grateful dead tribute 'wildflower seed' 8 or 9 years ago. He's very good so naturally at the time we were the world's greatest 'Dead' covers band
