One Grain of Sand

One Grain of Sand was filmed over a single Autumn & Winter and is a short portrait of lone climbing and walking in the Dark Peak of the Derbyshire moorlands. The film showcases stunning Peak District scenery, mixed with the calming sounds of moorland wind, rain and rivers

Just what I needed to remind me there's more to climbing than training in a dingy garage!

Really lovely. Well done. Guitar complements visuals beautifully.

Enjoyed that!

I really appreciated how the relatively small portion of climbing was a well thought out mechanism to express a deep love of the Peak and everything that makes it special. Very well executed!

The Moors have been kind to me in lockdown and this brought back some memories. Lovely problem at Black Tor for one.

What its all about.

Really captured the beauty waiting to be found out on the moors in all seasons.

Spirit of the hills.

What a beautiful film. I particularly liked the way it really made you see the beauty of the moors. Actually made me quite emotional and pine to be back out in these places again. Thank you.

I kept waiting for this to 'get going' as it were, and it never did... and that's what made it work so beautifully. Lovely stuff

Edit - does anyone know the route/problem being done between the cuts to the short eared owl? It's not one I recognise.. maybe one of the edges above Derwent Res?

Here's another of his fabulous little films. 90 seconds of moorland cottongrass.

If it had gone on any longer it would have brought a tear to my eye...

Bloody brilliant!

In reply to mrphilipoldham:

Hi Phil, that whole sequence is at the mythical Grinah Stones. The problem doesn't have a name or grade, just like all the problems there.

Thought it'd be up that way, thanks!

Like some others, brought a tear to my eye. One for turning the volume up on, not for the guitar necessarily, but for the sounds of the wind, rain, streams. It seems to capture the atmosphere of the Dark Peak really well, and a place I'm missing lots at the moment. 5 stars!

What a lovely job of capturing the magic of the Peak.  No surprise to see it's from the makers of my favourite, Against the Grain. Great work, thanks for making these

Beautiful, Dave. It brought back feelings I hadn’t felt in years.

Captivating, almost every scene is a wallpaper shot.. thank you

perfect.

I wouldn't change a thing. And I'll stick forks in my eyes if I've ever said that about a climbing video before.

(In fact, I think the climbing might be incidental and the video is really about mellow reflection of the beauty and solitude of the moorland.)

What barren, tree-less places these moors are. Love the footage of the short-eared owl, though!

No pads! Remember that?

That's Grinah Stones - magnificent moorland bouldering without a name or grade in sight. I occasionally take a short rope and some slings as there are a few higballs lurking and it'd be a heck of a place to hop out from.

Lovely.

I did this kind of thing all through the 80s, in the same area. Quiet, few people. And as in this contemplative essay, no crash mat.

Thanks for taking the time to make this 😀

Absolutely love it Dave. It only takes one look at social media to see that climbing is rocketing off at a completely different tangent to this, but this is really what it is for us. I still remember with such fondness our first climb after Lockdown 1.0 and how much of a pleasure it was just be sat out somewhere.
