In the 1970s, an eccentric mountaineer called Hamish Hamilton (whilst developing the now legendary Vango Force 10 tents) theorised that cotton, canvas canopy fabrics gained much of their water resistance by wicking moisture along the softly spun yarns – a characteristic known as capillary action. Hamish went on to apply this theory to synthetic fabrics.
The first Pertex® fabrics were created using very tightly woven ultra-fine polyamide yarns and Hamish set about proving his theory by developing and marketing products that demonstrated capillary action.
As the original fabrics were developed Pertex® found that many of its features (light weight, softness, down-proof and fast drying) were of benefit to down and synthetic insulated equipment and clothing. Their fabrics offered a significant weight saving over existing fabrics at that time, so the move into the sleeping bag and clothing market and the relationship with Rab® began.
Pertex® and Rab® have been working together for over 30 years and developing fabrics that provide essential protection for outdoor enthusiasts all over the world, whether they are mountain biking, alpine climbing or running their favourite trail.
