CAMP Janja Collection - Harness, Quickdraws, Screwgates Review

© UKC Gear

With the cost of living (and gear) so high, it's nice to review something competitively priced because, let's face it, not much is these days! For a low-frills sport climbing setup that won't break the bank, Italian brand CAMP have recently released the Janja Collection, which includes the Energy Harness, Photon Quickdraws, Photon Screwgate and Polimago Chalk Bag. The collection is designed to be affordable, but it still tick all the boxes in terms of the quality and features you'd want, without adding anything extra that might affect the price. It's also pink, which I like, but won't be to everyone's tastes. This is the last time we'll mention the colour in this review.

Energy Janja Harness - £50

The Energy Harness is designed primarily for indoor and sport climbing, but would easily double as a trad harness. It's impressively lightweight, coming in at 305g. It's also impressively comfortable too, with both the leg loops and waistband being nice and wide, which distributes the load well. It's comfortable both to climb in, sit in, and fall in.

It's got all the features you require, including four gear loops and a haul loop on the back. The gear loops are basic, but functional. The haul loop is arguably better suited towards the USA, where they tend to use tag lines. In the UK we don't and as a result of this I'd have much preferred a proper fifth gear loop, but the haul loop works fine - it's just that everything sits a little bit lower.

When it comes to sizing it is a women's size/fit. I'm usually between a 10-12 in clothing and a Medium in this harness has been pretty much a perfect fit for me. On cool days there's enough space for an extra layer and on warm days there's room to cinch it up. The leg loops are elasticated so accommodate a range of different leg sizes.

Price-wise, at £50 you're getting really good value for money and it'd make a great first harness. I'd even go as far as to say for single pitch sport climbing it's as good as any other harness I've got currently, ticking all the boxes.

Photon Express Quickdraw - 12cm £17.11

The Photon Quickdraw is available in 12cm and 18cm, as well as in a six-pack. It features a decent sized 25mm sling, which is both easy and comfortable to grab whilst working routes. As is standard these days, the rope end features a retainer, which helps to keep it in place, ensuring that it's not flipped whilst you're trying to clip it - which is always a nightmare scenario when you're on redpoint.

These quickdraws lack the design and ergonomic refinement of something like the DMM Alpha, but at around a tenner less per unit you have to ask yourself how much that matters to you. If you're just starting out in sport climbing, or looking to increase your quickdraw collection without breaking the bank, the Photon is going to look pretty attractive. As with the whole Janja collection, it may lack frills, but it works fine! The carabiners themselves have a nice action, with a good 'snap' to the snap gate. Nobody, after all, likes a sloppy snap gate. The nose of the carabiner is clean too, which is another feature that's become commonplace these days, and rightly so as it makes stripping quickdraws out of routes so much easier.

Due to the thick tape used on the Photon I wouldn't necessarily say they're designed to be the lightest quickdraw, but despite this it turns out that they are actually remarkably light. At 97g for the 12cm, and 105g for the 18cm size, this quickdraw compares very well weight-wise with something like the DMM Shadow (12cm 103g; 18cm 108g), and costs a few pounds less per draw.

Photon Screwgate - £12

The first thing you notice about the Photon Screwgate is how light it is. At 43g it's incredibly lightweight for a decent sized screw gate. Its size is such that it's still easy to handle, unlike smaller models which tend to get a bit awkward to use. It's got a good wide opening too, so you can fit plenty of clove hitches in without it getting awkward to close again afterwards.

At £12 - yes, you read that right - it represents an absolute bargain since you could spend twice that on a screwgate.

Polimago Chalk Bag - £20

There is only so much you can say about a chalk bag, so I'll keep this one short.

The first thing you notice is how big it is, because it's got a good size and a decent opening, which is great for when you're desperately trying to chalk-up mid-crux. The opening is reinforced so that it stays open when you need it to and the material inside is nice and soft, which makes it pretty pleasant use.
