Climbing Technology Sport Climbing Highlights Gear News

© Climbing Technology

Although Climbing Technology design gear for all types of climbing, it's probably fair to say that sport climbing equipment forms the core of their range. CT are based on the outskirts of Milan, close the Italian Alps and a number of world class sport climbing venues. They manufacture almost all of their products in Italy and more often than not manage to produce gear that is both innovative and good value for money.

Here are a few sport climbing specific highlights from the current CT range.

Tricky

New for 2019, the Tricky is an useful addition to a sport climbing rack. It enables the climber to clip a bolt or piece of protection that may otherwise be out of reach. The Tricky has a long, stiffened sling with a Nimble Tricky carabiner attached. The crab has a lever system that can be kept open enabling easy clipping which then closes when pulled downwards. The Tricky can be folded and carried on a harness at half length.

The Tricky is also useful as an aid climbing tool when a loop at the bottom of the sling makes it easier to grab. CT stress that the Tricky isn't a replacement for a quick draw and musn't be used as such.

On-Sight Harness

The On-Sight is a stripped down sport climbing specific harness that still offers great comfort for all day sessions. Weighing in at under 300g for a size medium, the On-Sight is a great choice for the dedicated sport climber looking for a harness they can also use for a spot of trad too.

Best in Test Large

The On-Sight has four large gear loops and combines a solid construction with simple, well thought out features. It's available in four sizes, from XS to XL and was recently awarded a 'best in test' in UKC's sport climbing harness group review.

Click Up

Probably the one product that CT are best known for, the Click Up is a market leading assisted braking belay device that continues to be extremely popular with sport climbers.

Over the years the Click Up has developed a reputaion for being a safe and easy to use belay device that is particularly suited to indoor and sport climbing. It can be used with ropes with a diameter from 8.6mm to 10.5mm and is compact and lightweight.

The Click Up is smooth when paying out rope and quite intuitive to use which make it suited to less experienced climbers. In the event of a fall the device locks by clicking up into a postion that locks the rope. The Click Up is smooth when lowering and offers great value for money considering its excellent features and performance. Another 'best in test' winner, this time from UKC's assisted braking belay device review a couple of years ago.

Nimble Fixbar NY Pro Quickdraw

CT re-designed the Nimble crab and quickdraw range a couple of years ago and continue to tweak it season on season. It's a sport specifc draw that's very durable and a pleasure to use.

The Nimble Fixbar NY Pro has a wide and robust slingle that's easy to handle, along with a Fixit rubber retainer to keep the crab in place. The upper crab features CT's new Fixbar which prevents cross loading by stopping the crab from rotating around a sling or anchor.

The Carabiner itself features an easy to open, catch free gate that helps make clipping bolts or the rope as easy as possible. It has a major axis strength of 25kN and minor axis open gate strength of 10kN

Sport Chain

The Sport Chain is an innovative product designed to offer a multitude of uses whether sport, trad or alpine climbing. It is made up of six dyneema loops which are attached to a larger dyneema loop for the harness at one end and a Nimble Evo SG carabiner at the other.

It's a very useful tool at stances on multi pitch routes and can also be used for abseiling and as an etrier too. The Nimble SG carabiner is strong, easy to use and features a Fixit rubber retainer that holds the crab in place on the sling.
