The UKC/UKH team have just returned from the final OutDoor show at Friedrichshafen. We saw hundreds of innovative, colourful and exciting new products and in this roundup you can see some of the best products in the clothing category:
Legging designed for rock climbing with extremely durable, stretch fabric, low bulk seams and deep waistband. Arc'teryx promise that their "merrowstitch", low bulk seams will reduce the likelihood of damage to areas of high wear like the seat and knees. They noticed that climbers were buying expensive yoga pants and ruining them on rock so this legging is intended to be a climbing-first, all day garment that can cross over into yoga and lifestyle.
Lightweight softshell smock with full-size, helmet compatible hood. Breatheable, water resistant and lightweight for multi-pitching where the weather is changeable. Readers might be familiar with "HemLock" technology which has been brought over from the Alpha range of waterproofs: bulky little inserts in the jacket hem to prevent it riding up over the harness.
Super light wind shells using new proofing technology from Green Theme International that uses no palm oil and no water. The DWR coating on the Distance claims to be permanent whilst the Deploy is only 48grams...oooft.
Range of aftercare products for clothing, footwear and equipment. Grangers have Bluesign manufacturing accreditation. Keep your kit clean and proofed and it will perform better and keep you comfortable. Tumble drier is recommended but you can use a hairdryer as the next best thing which is reassuring.
Alpha Direct in a 60gram weight with Pertex Quantum Air means this jacket is lightweight, breathable and versatile for many different conditions.
Pertex Shield and obscenely light at 140g for a featured, highly breathable waterproof. Matching trousers available (105g).
Features baffled PrimaLoft Thermoplume, a synthetic insulation first used by Montane in 2017. The sides and inside sleeves feature a super stretchy fleece panel for freedom of movement and reduced weight (536g).
Revolutionary combination of performance, weight and breathability for fast paced mountain activities. Features Pertex Shield with dry touch backer which delivers lightweight and packable protection whilst remaining highly breathable. Weighs just 190g, packs in to its own pocket, an update of a Montane classic.
Building on the success of Kinetic Plus, the Alpine has ceramic print on wear points and a helmet compatible hood. The new pants are a waterproof you can wear all day that are soft and stretchy and don't feel like a crinkly shell.
Lightweight but designed to cope with harsh conditions. Gore-tex Paclight+ shell but Goretex Pro in high wear areas, this jacket is a hybrid when you need it. The Women's jacket now features the Alpine Hood which Rachael is really excited about.
Crossover range of jackets for our British climate including a weatherproof stretch softshell (Kalmar and Echo), a wind proof with awesome insulating hood (Duin and Dusa) and a lightweight wind proof (Palmer Plus) at just 170g. The range use PFC-free DWR treatment and is part of the Fairware Foundation with traceability from source to shop. Sprayway are definitely keen on the environmental and ethical impact of their products in our world.
Environmentally friendly socks made from recycled fishing nets. Highly wicking and extremely breathable, they're also hardwearing. The range stretches from running through to mountaineering and there is a merino mix too.
A soft, stretchy lightweight fully waterproof softshell in TNF apex flex light fabric. The latest model in the range is the lighter, stretchier And more breathable Apex Flex Light, with a harness compatible cut and helmet friendly hood.

I haven't been able to watch the Rab Kinetic video yet, but I assume it's an update of their own jacket and not 'a Montane classic'... :-)
Thanks for these round ups.
Did anybody have anything that wasn't 'lightweight'? Anyone pushing 'hard wearing and durability' or, dare i say it 'heavy duty'? In usual British conditions I struggle to get more than a season out of anything! The Tupilak is the closest but Paclite is not exactly durable especially on chest panels. I'd sacrifice a little weight and even breathability for a little tougher and longer life.
Oh and I think the blurb on the Minimus is just repeated under the Kinetic video. :-)
Great to see Rachael C on the team!
Just had that brought to my attention, Nick is now aware and will be updating ASAP.
OutDoor is definitely a summer show, so tends to feature kit at the lighter end of the spectrum. That said, I can see where you're coming from and am inclined to agree - most of us want an all-rounder that's a reasonable weight and pretty hard wearing. The same goes with rock shoes, as the models being released these days are getting softer and softer, whereas in my experience most of us just want a reasonably stiff + solid shoe will do us for either trad and sport (bouldering is a bit different).
As per the message above, I'm not sure exactly what's happened there, but Nick is going to get it sorted later this afternoon.
I couldn't agree more, she's done a great job interviewing and has really livened up the videos.
Cheers. I look forward to watching these when I'm not at work!
