The Grivel Tech Machine

Grivel, metal specialists since 1818, initially launched the Tech Machine axe last winter and it has since gone on to be the axe of choice for some of the country’s top climbers.

The Grivel Tech Machine is a strong and technical axe for alpine, hard Scottish mixed or steep ice climbing. Lightweight and functional, it features the Grivel T-rated ice blade which is tapered down to 3mm at the final point to ensure an excellent ice penetration, even in brittle ice.

The handle design ensure a continually comfortable hold allowing you to use the Tech Machine for long periods, it’s also really well insulated.

For mixed climbing an optional Mix blade 4.2 mm is available as a direct replacement, as well as a hammer and an adze.

The balance of The Tech Machine is quite neutral, rather than being head heavy, which makes it a great all-round technical tool but this can be adapted with the addition of the optional hammer (Mix pick required), making the balance a bit more top heavy meaning a more efficient place on longer routes and ice that's hard to penetrate.

A pretty helpful detail is the spike on the base which can be used to keep your tools safely attached to it and for topping out.

The new carbon version will be available from this winter, weighing 100 grams less than its big brother.

I have just received a Tech Machine as a replacement for another axe. First impressions, solid, hefty swing, fantastic pick, hope to use it this Sunday? I do think they've missed a trick though, being unable to fit hammer on ice pick, only fatter mixed one! Surely for dense, cold ice, where more weight to settle pick is preferable, a thinner pick would displace less ice, than a fatter one! Stuart

When's the carbon fibre version out?

These axes are an absolute joy to use on ice, though agree it would be very useful to be able to attach adze and hammer to them in ice pick mode. Looking forward to seeing how they perform on mixed!
