Swift Pro Dry 8.9mm: Versatile & Water Repellent Gear News

© Edelrid

The Swift Pro Dry is a timely update to one of EDELRID's most versatile, popular and technically impressive ropes. Whilst it retains a thin (8.9mm) diameter, triple-rating with suitability for use as a single, half or twin rope and Thermo Shield treatment to impart those signature EDELRID handling characteristics. It gains a brand new Pro Dry treatment, which conforms to and even exceeds the stringent new UIAA standards for water repellency.

This video explains how a rope's dry treatment is tested, as well as providing an overview of the current UIAA standards for dry treated ropes:

The Swift Pro Dry is available in lengths between 30m - 80m and adheres to rigourous bluesign® production standards. bluesign® is the guarantee for a sustainable rope production. It eliminates harmful substances from the manufacturing process, and sets and controls standards for environmentally friendly and safe production. This not only ensures that EDELRID ropes meet very stringent consumer safety requirements but also gives climbers confidence that they're purchasing a truly sustainable climbing rope.

<5%? Then why does my pack feel so heavy after I pack my dry treated ropes away in winter?
How old are your ropes? The new UIAA specifications only came into play last year, so if your ropes are older than that then that's probably why. I have to admit that all my old dry ropes have done exactly the same! On the note of the UIAA specs, the impression I got not just from Edelrid, but from other rope manufacturers, was that it has now become far more difficult to achieve 'dry' status. Hopefully this equates to a higher standard of performance in wet/wintery conditions, but I'll leave this to a suitable gear reviewer to decide - I'm trying to avoid those sorts of conditions currently!
