Lorpen T3 Trail Running Eco Socks Review

Running socks aren't just for running; whenever I'm in trail shoes or approach shoes I'll generally go for short-ish socks that are close-fitting and quick-drying. From local morning runs, to hill runs, to hiking, I've used these Lorpen socks a lot in recent weeks.

Pros: Cool, fast-drying and nicely-fitted
Cons: Getting a bit furred after only a few weeks use

For a two-week backpacking journey on the Cape Wrath Trail I carried three pairs of T3 socks: two of the lighter weight T3 Trail Running Eco rotating for daytime wear, and one thicker pair to be worn in the tent or if the weather proved colder than hoped. We got a bit of everything, first a week of unbroken hot sun then cold and wet conditions in which my feet were often soaked. Between these extremes and the demands of rough ground, big days and a heavy pack, the socks were really put through their paces. They didn't let me down.

Standard thin T3 (£19) are lightweight, cool and very quick-drying; wash them out and they're done after a couple of hours hanging in the breeze. The midweight Padded version (£21) adds cushioning around the bottom of the foot, and a thicker feel that makes them a good choice in cooler conditions (I might use something warmer still in proper winter).

Environmental credentials come in the form of a high proportion of recycled materials, including something called Red-Cycled Nylon made from recycled fishing nets, which is said to be exceptionally durable. The fabric starts out a little slidey inside, but they soon bedded in and became more comfortable. While these socks are sold as hard-wearing, it has to be said that some of the fibres are a bit furred after a spring of use - though as yet this is just cosmetic.

In preference to shorter shoe-height socks I like the slightly longer mid-cut of the T3, which come a good bit over the ankle to offer more protection from sun and heather. Both thinner and thicker versions have a close and comfortable fit, which I've found snug without being tight, giving me no slippage or rubbing. Whether conditions were hot and dry or cold and wet, my feet felt comfy, un-sweaty and pretty much blister-free for the whole two weeks on the Cape Wrath Trail. I think that says a lot about these socks.
