TirolWool® Celliant® is a reflective hybrid insulation that outperforms conventional wool and synthetic alternatives. Efficient, warm, soft and low-bulk, it is created by blending 40% natural TirolWool® with 60% Celliant®, an enhanced polyester with thermo-reactive minerals that reflects and recycles radiant heat back to the body.

While the human body is an energy source, during low-intensity activities it can still lose 65 percent of its heat through radiation. TirolWool® Celliant® performs during activity, but also static situations thanks to its heat-retention and infrared reflection properties. Originally used in medicine and science, Celliant® directs infrared energy back to the body. Celliant® also increases the thermo- regulating function of TirolWool®, improving its warmth-to-weight ratio and making it feel softer and more comfortable to wear. Celliant® is permanent as it is blended into a resin and embedded into the core of each fiber.

And the sheep? Resident in South Tyrol, these tough hombres live year-round at 2,000m in harsh conditions where normal sheep wouldn't survive. Their fleece has been used to make warm clothing for centuries, and is known for its outstanding warmth, breathability, thermo-regulation and hydrophobic qualities.

By choosing to source local wool, Salewa is reducing transportation and cutting its product carbon footprint. TirolWool® Celliant® has strong sustainable credentials; the wool is a natural, renewable material and is chlorine free, while Celliant® is made from polyester yarns, 70% of which are recycled from European post-consumer waste.

Salewa is using TirolWool® Celliant® in five garments, all available in men's and women's versions. The Puez TW CLT Half Zip Jacket (£225) is a technical pull-on design with a PFC- free water-resistant ripstop nylon shell over mapped TirolWool® Celliant® insulation. Cut for mobility, it features high-reach sleeves to ensure no hem lift, and a deep two-way front zip for temperature regulation. The large front 'kangaroo' pocket keeps your hands warm, plus there's a zipped chest pocket and an insulated hood.

The Puez TW CLT Vest (£135) uses the same TirolWool® Celliant® and Puez TWC Mens Half Zip PFC-free water-resistant ripstop nylon shell combo to keep your core warm, with a full-length front zip and two zipped pockets.

The Fanes TW CLT Hood Jacket (£180) is an all-rounder using TirolWool® Celliant® within a water- resistant nylon shell, in a hooded 2-pocket design that's cut for freedom of movement, while the Fanes TW CLT Jacket (£160) uses the same body design but without a hood.

Then there's the Puez TW CLT Pant (£180), a brilliant winter option using lightweight mapped TirolWool® Celliant shelled with a PFC-free water-resistant ripstop nylon and Durastretch Bambooskin Eco knee reinforcement. Cut for freedom of movement, there are two zipped pockets, side ventilation zippers for temperature regulation, and a stretch inner gaiter.

Finally, there are two gloves and a mitten. The Ortles GTX Warm Glove (£165) is a technical alpine glove with all the features you'd expect – pre-curved fingers, 3D thumb construction, goat leather palm, GORE-TEX liner, carabiner loop – but adding mapped TirolWool® Celliant® insulation, giving warmth with dexterity. The Ortles GTX Grip Glove (£145) is a similar design, but using a shorter cuff rather than a gauntlet. And the Ortles TW Long Mitten (£80) is a non-Gore anatomically pre-shaped design with a tough nylon body and goat leather palm.
