Arc'teryx Harnesses Evolution Continues

The key markers of an Arc'teryx "Warp Strength Technology" harness have always been comfort, weight and packability - but evolution doesn't stand still.

The Arc'teryx design team has delivered a newly conceptualized harness range, pared down to five simple styles that fulfil a climbers' key needs, while being more robust and just as packable as their predecessors.

All five harnesses (one unisex, two women's and two men's) are constructed based on ‘Warp Strength Technology' – a special manufacturing method where the weft yarns are taken out of the load-bearing webbing band, leaving only the warp yarns. The latter are spread out over the width of the swami or leg loop and laminated into several layers of material, distributing the load over the maximum surface possible.

The changes in the next generation of harnesses are all on the inside. The warp yarns are now fixed onto the backing material to prevent them from moving inside the harness. Reinforced and slightly padded edges are added before the lamination process, offering more comfort and stabilizing the edges of belt and leg loops. The outer material is a sturdy Burly Double Weave. An easy-to-handle stainless steel hook serves for quick detachment of the back elastics.

The women's harnesses offer slightly changed geometry, with a longer belay loop (+3,5 cm) that matches the higher pelvic and minimizes the tension between leg loops and swami belt.

"The key markers of an Arc’teryx ‘Warp Strength Technology’ harness have always been comfort, weight and packability - but evolution doesn’t stand still." I'm not sure if adding a bit of padding and making the harnesses heavier is exactly "evolution".

It is if its environment changes to favour more padding and more weight. If, for example, climbers are getting fatter. Which is certainly the case in the sample immediately available for my personal observation.
