Whatever the grade, traverses put you in exciting positions normally gained only by routes of a higher standard. The eccentric tradition of climbing sideways also provides the opportunity to enjoy longer routes, often with a sense of journey and a chance to fully engage your second in the commitment of the venture. I've included everything from quick and easy short gritstone ticks to rarely repeated major multipitch missions. In the full knowledge that the absolute pointlessness of climbing sideways can only be eclipsed by celebrating such an activity with a list, then here is that list. 'Peak Traverses' is for routes not boulder problems, with something for everyone from trad Diff to E7 and sport 5a to 8a. Today's guidebook editors have a nasty habit of leaving traverses out of their guides, or listing them but without descriptions or topos. This list fights against the trend and contains a lifetime of sideways pleasure. If you tick them all I'll buy you a pint.
